Bug Description
Hi
When starting /etc/init.d/lightdm (either directly from root console or through SysV init), it will get stuck because lightdm doesn't fork into background when starting.
Please could you add --background option to start-stop-daemon to fix this? (note: the debian lightdm package already does this)
This change is needed for ubuntuBSD (which uses SysV init to manage system daemons).
Thank you!

Debian does it differently - is there any advantage over each method?
I'm wondering if we should just copy the Debian init script entirely, given the Ubuntu version seems very out of date.
