Bug Description

I'm on VMware Workstation 8 and 9. Not tested on physical machine.

I'm having this issue since Alpha 1, but I always waited for a fix... till now.

The first boot is fine (not always), but when I reboot or reset the VM, the bug appears.

The symptoms are random. Sometimes you get a blinking cursor (_), or a lonely [ OK ] in the screen, or "Checking battery state... [ OK ]".

Workaround: Login into console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) as root and enter "service lightdm start" twice. Then, the login screen appears.

Exactly the same here.
I'm running a clean installation of Ubuntu 12.10 (32bit) on VMWare Player 5.0.1 with Win 7 x64 Host.
About 70-80% of the boot-ups, the display-manager starts (I can see the mouse for a few seconds on a black screen) and then crashes (back to the boot-up sequence with a lonley [OK].
Switching to a console in this case and doing a "service lightdm start" (most of the time once only) brings up the GUI.
The other 20-30% Ubuntu just boots up without any problems.
