Bug Description

Hi,

This bug appears right after upgrading to Quantal. Lightdm works well, but when I try to login, a console screen with a lot of text is openned, then the Lightdm screen reappears immediately. I thus cannot open my session graphically in Quantal (while I never expererienced such thing in Precise).
Note that there is no problem when I try to connect in console mode (via tty1 for instance).

What is strange about this is that I *can* open a graphical session as guest. Maybe it's not because of Lightdm, but of some configuration file I have. I used Gnome-shell before the upgrade, but it keeped crashing: do you thing this is because Gnome-Shell crashes at launch?
When I try to run “gnome-shell --replace” on a guest session (which is on Unity but default), I get a screen with window, but no window manager seems to be there (is that even possible?): I cannot interact with other window than the one I focus into, and I cannot change such a focus…

If that can help, here is a bug report of another problem I encountered while upgrading: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1059231 . Maybe it's linked?

Shall I report a bug against Gnome-Shell rather than Lightdm? If it really is Gnome-shell that cause this bug, it would be nice from Lightdm to display a message informing that the window manager crashed, so that we can report a bug directly against it ;-)

Hoping it can help,
Martin.

OK, I can confirm this bug is not because of Lightdm: I've selected a different window manager before starting the session (by the way, the new graphical style is quite beautiful now!) and it works well.
Just a displayed warning message to inform that the window manager crashed would have been nice to prevent me to report a bug against Lightdm ☺

Best,
Martin.

I am having a problem with a "similar" issue as the OP on my iBook G4 running Lu 14.04 . . . after running a recent update/upgrade with only 3 or 4 items listed, "dbus" was one I remember . . . screen went black . . . tried to do something in TTY console to "restart" . . . then wound up shutting down. On reboot the lightdm window loads, when I add my password, the screen goes black, then the lightdm window loads again . . . . Using "guest" to log in gets me into a GUI that works . . . can't log in as admin/user.

Booted into "recovery" and ran through the dpkg & fsck & network enabling . . . a few times, there were numerous errors that showed up . . . problem was not fixed . . . .

Pursuing this issue on the "questions" format has given me some things to try out, including creating a new user, which I can log into and "sudo" with . . . original user will not log into GUI, only TTY. I'm adding my "apport" data here as the problem continues . . . .

OK, that seems to have "failed." I guess I will open a new bug report about this similar problem.
