Bug Description

If I install a Ubuntu 12.04 system from scratch, everything works fine, but if I want to use nis package to allow nis user to login, I cannot. I have to insert the following line into /etc/lightdm/lighdm.conf:

greeter-show-manual-login=true

Otherwise one cannot login as a nis user from login manager lightdm. From my point of view, this has to be done automatically during installation of nis or ldap client packages.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1012147/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

I'm not sure how the nis or ldap packages would integrate with lightdm here. Could lightdm provide a .d conf directory, or just default to manual login when NIS or LDAP (or something non-"compat" in nsswitch.conf) is in use?

(And the mere presence of packages perhaps shouldn't change behaviour, either. We'd need to actually detect that NIS or LDAP are really in use)

Usually if I install nis package, I am going to use it. So what's the problem to trigger a lightdm.conf entry??? Btw. it is much more irritating to have no possipility to login, than to have an additional manual one.

Under 13.10beta2 (lightdm 1.8.0), this bug is made even worse as lightdm ignores the
greeter-show-manual-login=true
setting completely => NIS users cannot log in at all.

Under a standard desktop install of trusty, i don't have a /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf. Any clues on that?
