Bug Description
Got a Kubuntu 15.04 system on my laptop.
Upon upgrading towards 15.10 release suddenly the greeter wasn't presented anymore upon boot. Logging in to the console and then 'startx' made KDE work, but it was a PITA ...
A little searching revealed the problem: Apparently the upgrade involved a change in some directories used, and the upgrade process didn't create the dir containing the .Xauthority file.
Reproducible: upon every boot
Solution:
[as root] mkdir -p /var/lib/lightdm; chown -R lightdm:lightdm /var/lib/lightdm ; chmod 0750 /var/lib/lightdm
Now it works as expected...
