Bug Description
Serge asked me to open a bug for this at least for tracking.

Scott,
upstream was going to apply the patch after some reworking of the underlying code. Do you need me to put the patch I originally wrote in the precise package? (backporting the version that ends up upstream may end up hairy depending on how invasive they make it)
