If using the alsa backend for qemu makes the symptom go away, it's fairly unlikely that PulseAudio is the culprit, since using the alsa backend still routes through PA on the host due to the pulse alsa-plugin being used.

It might make sense to ship Karmic with that env var (QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=alsa)...
