This is a libva issue, not vlc. You can get a similar error by simply typing:

vainfo

In my case (maverick release, Libva 1.0.1-3, vdpau-va-driver 0.6.3-1) I get a segmentation fault:

Blocked: call to setenv("_PX_CONFIG_ORDER", "", 1)
libva: libva version 0.31.1
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so
Segmentation fault (core dumped).
