Bug Description
We can see this in the build logs[1], that default build flags are missing. And, in the Makefile(s), we see that CFLAGS is not honored from the outside:
# Set compile option CFLAGS
ifdef EXTRA_CFLAGS
CFLAGS := $(EXTRA_CFLAGS)
else
CFLAGS := -g -Wall
endif

* debian/rules: ensure build is done with distro build flags (LP: #2069195) MAINT_APPEND to honor existing build defaults
- Set EXTRA_CFLAGS to CFLAGS as passed by debhelper
- Use DEB_CFLAGS_
