Bug Description

It seems that according to developers of melt/Kdenlive that there are incompatibilities between SDL 1.12.13 in Ubuntu 9.10 and X server drivers. Updating to version 1.2.14 has confirmed that this problem is fixed.

"TandJ, the version of SDL in Ubuntu 9.10 is incompatible with some X server drivers or X itself and a particular feature of SDL that MLT uses. I confirmed this is fixed in the latest version of SDL I built from source tarball, but I do not know when it will appear in Debian or Ubuntu. Looks like we need to start a campaign to request that upgrade if it has not already started. I will look around or file a ticket somewhere."

and Debian bug report (and fix):

Many thanks,

Also affects OpenShot. I think it when using the SDL_ClipRect feature. I could reproduce the problem in VirtualBox with both packaged as well as 1.2.13 source tarball. Problem no longer exists - at least in VirtualBox - after compiling and using SDL 1.2.14 from source tarball.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for adding your comment to the Ubuntu bug tracker.

I am interested in your compiling SDL 1.2.14 from the tarball package. I
downloaded the tarball from the SDL website, expanded it and compiled it
(following the general instructions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/add-applications/C/install-file.html [https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/add-applications/C/install-file.html]
). However, I get a "Failed to initialize SDL: No available video device"
when I try to use MLT.

If you have the time, could you just go through the sequence of
installing from the source tarball so that I can have the satisfaction of
repeating your experiment?

Cheers,

Tom

version 1.2.14 is available in lucid, you can use prevu to backport it ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Prevu ) beside that there are already some ppas which contain a 1.2.14 package for karmic. for trying to get a actual backport of the version see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports#How%20to%20request%20new%20packages

I installed the SDL version 1.2.14 from a ppa and also libsdl1.2debian-pulsaudio, as advised on some of the Kdenlive forum posts. All works fine now. Many thanks.
