I have positive news!
please confirm my findings on (k)ubuntu hardy heron:
sudo rmmod usbhid
sudo modprobe usbhid mousepoll=2
these two commands fix the mousewheel issues entirely in the following games: "wolfenstein: enemy territory", "warsow", "enemy territory: quake wars", "doom3 demo"
