I cant reproduce this with 3.5.2-2ubuntu1 --templates are there and work fine.
@wouterla: Since you can reproduce the issue, could you check if it persists, when removing/moving your user profile (~/.config/libreoffice -- also make sure you do not have a ~/.libreoffice anymore).

I was seeing the same issue, removing ~/.config/libreoffice resolved it for me.

After I uninstalled the libreoffice dmath extension from synaptic, I could not open any (writer) documents anymore! The "template already exists" dialog was shown, and once I click on OK, LIbreOffice crashed.
Removing ~/.libreoffice and ~/.config/libreoffice solved the problem.

Up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04, LibreOffice 3.5.4.2

Closing as per #5, assuming a dirty profile being the root cause.

No, the root cause is that LibreOffice contained code producing a "templates already exists" error message. That should never happen, *regardless* of the profile contents, because it is not a helpful error message.

<https://www.google.com/search?q=%22templates+already+exists%22+site:cgit.freedesktop.org> does not find the string in current LibreOffice code, but a grep of the source code itself would be more definitive.
