Bug Description

1) lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu precise (development branch)
Release: 12.04

2) apt-cache policy libreoffice-writer
libreoffice-writer:
  Installed: 1:3.5.0-2ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:3.5.0-2ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:3.5.0-2ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What is expected to happen in Writer via the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/951091/+attachment/2853594/+files/ODT_with_pics.odt && lowriter --nologo ODT_with_pics.odt

save as .rtf and the .rtf file is similar in file size as the .odt (351.6 KB).

4) What happens instead is the .rtf is 9.5 MB.

For a comparison, Word 2010 converts the file into a 7.2 MB .rtf: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/951091/+attachment/2891425/+files/This%20is%20JPG%20image2.rtf

slon, thank you for taking the time to report this and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 951091
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Ran 'apport-collect 951091' and got 'No additinal information is collected'. So much for that.
So initial bug was discovered on Kubuntu 11.10 with libreoffice 3.5 from PPA and confirmed on 12.04 i386 daily build iso as of 03/10/2012.
Tried running 'ubuntu-bug libreoffice-writer' which choked on opening Firefox with this:

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

You must be kidding me!

At this point I decided I put in my honest effort and quit. I hope provided information will help, but I don't give a crap anymore. Good luck.

slon, if your using a PPA that is why no more information is collected. Could you please execute at the Terminal and post to this bug the following:
lsb_release -rd && apt-cache policy libreoffice-writer

As I mentioned above this bug is easily reproduced on "clean" daily build of pangolin. I attempted to run suggested commands aganst it, but gotten nowhere. So never mind my "poluted" Kubuntu, you can successfully reproduce this bug on "standard" ubuntu 12.04 pre-release.
Thank you.
Christopher, your rellentless pursuit is greatly appreciated.

slon, this is not reproducible. Could you please provide a Writer file (ex. .odt) that when coverted to .rtf demonstrates this problem?

Installed on a spare computer, up-to-date. Created from scratch or converted from .odt same result.
