Alvin, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please attach a Writer file that demonstrates this problem?

I'd rather not put those files on a public bug tracker. They are all bills to my customers. However, I created a similar template with LibreOffice 3.4.5 on Windows and found out that it couln't be opened either. Template is attached. Apport gave a message too, so I filed it as Bug #936829. I'm not sure yet if the bugs are related because apport doesn't react every time I try to open an .odt. (or .ott), but I'm pretty sure it is the same bug.

Unreproducible in Xubuntu 12.04 32-bit or 64-bit via the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/936245/+attachment/2761348/+files/Template.ott && lowriter --nologo Template.ott

May be a Kubuntu specific problem.

(Mistake in my original description. 'None of them can't be opened' would imply that there was no problem.)

This is caused by a dependency issue. If you install the "libreoffice-base" package it will work fine.

This is reproducible, by removing libreoffice and then just installing libreoffice-writer.

Alvin, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport . If you have done so, please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

Unreproducible in upstream LibreOffice. I removed all base components after installing LibreOffice from upstream debs.

Likely a difference between how LibreOffice is packaged vs upstream?

In particular from the upstream build I did not install the following: libobasis3.5-base_3.5.0-13_amd64.deb libobasis3.5-en-us-base_3.5.0-13_amd64.deb libobasis3.5-postgresql-sdbc_3.5.0-13_amd64.deb libreoffice3.5-base_3.5.0-13_amd64.deb

and it still worked..

Bryan Quigley, nice work checking into the upstream build. However, please do not toggle libreoffice (Ubuntu), as this report has enough information to be marked and remain Triaged. For more on this please see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status

The problem occurs for all documents containing form controls (text fields, checkboxes, etc.), this issue is tracked in bug #986205, I'm therefore marking this bug as a duplicate. Any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in the other report. Feel free to continue to report any other bugs you may find.
