Bug Description

1) lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 11.10
Release: 11.10

2) apt-cache policy libreoffice-impress
libreoffice-impress:
  Installed: 1:3.4.4-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:3.4.4-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:3.4.4-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-updates/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     1:3.4.3-3ubuntu2 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main i386 Packages

3) What is expected to happen in LibreOffice Impress via the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/908326/+attachment/2652710/+files/example.odp && loimpress -nologo example.odp

is the kerning looks the same in Normal mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/908326/+attachment/2645431/+files/Design%20view.png as it does in Slide Show mode.

4) What happens instead is the kerning is different in Slide Show mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/908326/+attachment/2645432/+files/Slide%20show%20view.png .

Here's how a slide looks in design view, note the nice tight and even appearance to the letter spacing.

Now how it appears in slide show mode.

Notice the amount of extra and uneven white space between letters, especially noticeable between the W and e of Webb and also the R and A of PRA, but not right elsewhere either.

By the way, PDF export, subject of a similar bug in the past, works fine for this slide.

A quick experiment suggests that the problem is partly related to the font used, as not all fonts suffer from the problem.

Note that all the fonts (I have tried so far) do kern correctly in the design view, it is the displayed slide show where kerning fails for some fonts.

Neil Woolford, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 908326
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.
As well, could you please attach the document that demonstrates this problem?

It's fine that your apport'ing under libreoffice instead of libreoffice-impress. It gives triagers and developers required information about your LO installation, despite not being as specific as you mentioned.

Neil Woolford, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport . If you have done so, please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

OK. Looking at existing bugs I find that upstream bug 43009 has similar characteristics to this bug, and refers back to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/779366 which appears very close to this bug.

I shall look at this further and make appropriate links between (duplicate?) bugs in launchpad and check that full information has been sent upstream.

Damn you automatic link highlighting!

The mention of an upstream bug with its number has created a link to an unrelated bug in launchpad.

The second link is valid, but could be more elegantly expressed as bug 779366.

Doh!
