Bug Description

Binary package hint: libreoffice

This has been happening periodically in 11.04 Natty since install (more or less when it was released). I am finding periodically that Libreoffice crashes on me. There doesn't seem to be any particular reason why it crashes, though I always seem to be attempting to do something (in this case it was selecting Tools>BibliographyDatabase in writer. This has happened twice now) Crashes happen with multiple documents opened, or just one, both with Calc and Writer. I don't regularly use other parts of OpenOffice, so I'm not sure if they also would crash.

I'm essay writing at the moment, so am likely to see these crashes a lot over the next few days. Am happy to troubleshoot any ideas, as well as helping implement any workaround. So far I can't think of any. Selecting the Tools>BibliographyDatabase item from the menu seems to crash the program every time.

I am working an an eeepc 901 netbook with 1Gb of Ram. Attached is the log report from /var/crash. Cheers.

No, this is not a direct duplicate of bug 742318. That bug is only related to crashes with Tools>Bibliography Database. The bug I am filing is much broader than that.... crashes happen at any particular time, without attempting to open that menu item. I can take out that item from my bug report, and still have the same crashes, which are not fixed. Could you please unmark this as a duplicate? I agree that some of this behaviour shows up with that bug, but there is more. Thanks.

Right, libreoffice has just crashed again, and NOTHING to do with a menu item. I was simply typing, and 'poof', there is goes again. Below is the result of running dmesg

Attached is the file /var/crash/_usr_lib_libreoffice_program_soffice.bin.1000.crash
While the same name as I posted before, my thoughts are it's probably different, as it's a different crash.

Please unmark this as a duplicate bug, as there seems to be a different issue. I would appreciate some thoughts as a workaround. At the time of the crash I had 3 writer documents opened, however it doesn't seem to matter if it's one or more, still the same random crashes.

I agree that this is *not* a duplicate. I too am experiencing occasional failures that are
segvs rather than thrown exceptions and are not correlated with any activity.

My most recent failure occurred after a couple of minutes of no keyboard/mouse activity
(I was listening to a talk). There was no crash info in /var/crash and the only relevant data
from dmesg is

[ 9830.760783] soffice.bin[1668]: segfault at 29 ip 00007f775e558ada sp 00007fffc386f098 error 4 in libvclplug_genlx.so[7f775e4c9000+e1000]

This is ubuntu 11.04 and the output from uname is

Linux rjhx201 2.6.38-9-generic #43pre201105270902-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 27 11:17:56 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Same problem still exists on ubuntu 11.10 64 bit using an Intel on-board graphics
where it crashes non-reproducable after opening a document after several PgUp/PgDown without hitting any menu button with following syslog message:

Also installing of "libreoffice-base" as mentioned in bug #527938 doesn't help.
