Bug Description

Open Calc -> <Ctrl> + <two finger scroll up/down>

Expected behaviour: document viewpan zooms/unzooms at a reasonable speed

Observed behaviour: document viewpan zooms/unzooms from maximum zoom in to maximum zoom out in maybe 10-15% of the height of the touchpad, i.e. it is unusably oversensitive.

Also affects Draw and Writer, 100% reproducible. Other apps (Firefox, Eye of Gnome/Image viewer) behave as expected (very usable zoom/unzoom sensitivity).

When I try to zoom using two-finger scroll on my touchpad on any LibreOffice application, the zooming is barely controllable and hardly ever lets me get to the level of zoom I want.

It feels like there is a zoom factor that is incorrectly calibrated so very thin scrolling on the touchpad becomes very coarse zooming on the application.

I expect that this problem is isolated to only some touchpads.

Bug 101388 seems to address a similar issue, but for two-finger scrolling in general. My computer is also a Lenovo, but an 80K9 laptop.

it seems you're using an old version of LibreOffice.
Could you please try to reproduce it with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ ?

Could you please create and attach a screencast showing the problem?
There are various free screencast software available for use, including Camstudio (Windows), Jing (Mac), Simple Screen Recorder (Linux) or screencast-o-matic.com (Web).

screencast of zooming action in LO Calc

The zoom depth depicted in the screencast is the result of scrolling a length of less than 2 cm in the touchpad. It is thus very hard to reach a specific zoom depth, since the zoom steps are very coarse.

I have the same problem, see bug Bug 123121.

Don't see how a screencast would help. Maybe a video of the user's fingers on the touchpad + the crazy fast scrolling.

@Adolfo Why low priority?

@Martin, @Iain why "wontfix"?

Is it a matter of reporting the bug elsewhere or a matter of touchpads being seen as unnecessary in LO?

The bug is not wontfix, it's just a tag used to determine if the issue is accepted or not as a release blocker, it was judged not important enough to be nominated, it's still a valid report though. Reporting upstream could increases the changes to have it being worked on though

Tomislav (hefest) wrote :

@Sebastian, thanks for the clarification, the tag seemed a bit misleading.

In the meantime, I've dug up that the bug has in fact been fixed upstream, although how/when/if that might trickle down to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, I have no idea.

@Tomislav, do you have any reference to share on how/when it has been fixed, maybe an upstream report which includes the details?

@Sebastien, this is what I found:

"Problem solved in LibreOffice 6.4.4.2." ( https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1156804 )

There is a bit more related information here, saying that it only affects LO on X11 and NOT on:

Could you try on Ubuntu 20.04 see if the issue is resolved there for you or maybe try the libreoffice snap which is a recent version and should be installable without issue on your current system

Tomislav (hefest) wrote :

@Sebastien

I don't have an easy way to boot 20.04 for the moment and I'm unlikely to upgrade to 20.04 any time soon. As for a snap, that might work, although it feels a bit like a zero-sum game: you can have a working touchpad or normal root filesystem access, but not both...I'll see what I can do, thanks for the suggestions!

Revision history for this message
Sebastien Bacher (seb128) wrote :

I was not suggesting to switch to the snap, just try to install it to confirm if the updated version really resolve the issue for you (one advantage of snaps is that they don't change anything on your system so if you install/try/uninstall you will basically be to the original state)

Tomislav (hefest) wrote :

I'm sorry about that: I misunderstood you.

It's good that you commented, because I installed LO 7 from snap and it's still broken. I open Calc, a new spreadsheet, scroll up or down, sometimes it works, sometimes it stalls and then starts working again. I open Draw, hold <Ctrl> and scroll on the touchpad (two-finger scroll) and Zoom in/out is extremely sensitive.

Dear Severo Raz,

To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today, LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed bugs which have not been touched for over a year.

There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in getting confirmation that the bug is still present.

If you have time, please do the following:

Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/

If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice.

If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice.

Please DO NOT

Update the version field
Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker)
Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular meaning that is not
appropriate in this case)

If you want to do more to help you can test to see if your issue is a REGRESSION. To do so:
1. Download and install oldest version of LibreOffice (usually 3.3 unless your bug pertains to a feature added after 3.3) from https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

2. Test your bug
3
. Leave a comment with your results.
4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo';
4b. If the bug was not present in 3.3 - add 'regression' to keyword

Feel free to come ask questions or to say hello in our QA chat: https://web.libera.chat/?settings=#libreoffice-qa
