Bug Description

When any type of dialog window opens, libreoffice crashes causing lightdm (unity?) to crash aswell.

Since not only libreoffice crashes, but also lightdm/unity, all programs will stop causing work in progress to be lost.

Ubuntu: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
libreoffice: 1:5.1.2

Relevant dmesg output:
[91484.085656] drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang
[91838.035765] [drm] stuck on render ring
[91838.036466] [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 7:0:0x85dffffc, in Xorg [24404], reason: Ring hung, action: reset
...
[91848.037375] Hardware name: LENOVO 20EF000SMN/20EF000SMN, BIOS GNET73WW (2.21 ) 03/12/2015

Since the gpu hangs, this is likely a problem with intel gfx drivers. Should be of high importance since all work in progress is lost dues to complete lightdm crash.

Mattias Lundmark, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

To clarify, after all the crashes, are there any crash files in /var/crash?

Dear Mattias,

Thanks for following up on this.
I checked in the crash folder and there are no files related to this
crash. If I open a password protected document in Writer, the computer
crashes after I enter the password of the document. It goes back to the
logon screen within a few seconds. This only occurs on my Dell E7440
laptop and not on my Dell PC.
Thanks for your support.

Kind regards,

Titus

Mattias Lundmark, could you please attach the file that this is reproducible with?

Dear Mattias,

I don't want to send the password protected document because it contains
all my usernames and passwords. I hope you understand. I tried to create
a new password protected document, but as soon as I get the pop-up
window to enter my password, the system crashes again. I now get the
screen to recover the previous files, but whatever I select, I get a
black window followed by a crash.

I uninstalled, rebooted and re-installed Libreoffice, but the problem
remains the same.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Titus

Dear Mattias,

After re-installation I managed to cancel the recovery of the two
documents I had open during the crash. I opened my password protected
document and the window where I have to enter my password was black and
the background window was flashing very fast. After entering my
password, the document opened, but this time the Icons and fonts are
much smaller than what it used to be. Can it be a graphics issue?

Thanks for your support,

Titus

Christopher,

No, there are no log files in /var/crash.

There is no possibility for the error reporting tool to start here, since the unity/lightdm crashes and the user is required to log back in.

Mattias Lundmark, to advise, the scope of this report is only LibreOffice crashing (not other programs, or collateral damage from this).

Regarding the GPU hang, and x ultimately crashing causing the session to be booted back to the login screen, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with Ubuntu by ensuring you have the package xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information running the following from a terminal:
ubuntu-bug xorg

Also, please feel free to subscribe me to it.

There is already an appropriate bug 1574266 I think.

Marcin Sochacki, I'm not sure why bug 1574266 has anything to do with this report, as the original reporter didn't file it.

Of course it is related, because both bugs report similar symptoms -- Xorg crashing/freezing with "drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang" error after running Libreoffice. Of course LO is an unlikely cause, rather it is something in Xorg, so the other bug is more appropriate.

Marcin Sochacki, to advise, similar symptom doesn't mean same root cause. Despite this, as already covered in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/1576163/comments/7 , this report isn't scope to a GPU crash. Only LO crashing.

Christopher and Marcin,

I do agree that bug 1574266 is related to this bug. Actually I suspect that if that bug is resolved, this bug can be closed as a duplicate.

Both bugs are due to the graphics problem. However I have only been able to reproduce it with Libreoffice. I filed the bug in libreoffice, since I was able to reproduce it.

I don't have enough knowledge about libreoffice, or Xorg drivers to know if this is a bug in Xorg, or if it is a bug in libreoffices use of Xorg. Personally I would suggest that these two bugs are linked.

Mattias you are correct about that other bug. A temporary solution that works is installing xserver-xorg-video-intel.

I experience this issue with Ubuntu 16.04 on an Asus UX303LN laptop. The temporary fix of installing xserver-xorg-video-intel seems to work for me too.

I can provide log-files or test fixes if that would help us resolve the problem.

Is bug #1575301 a duplicate of this one?

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all reported bugs in a timely manner. This bug was reported some time ago and there have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time.

Ubuntu 16.04 (xenial) reached end-of-standard-support on April 29, 2021.

Does anyone still see a problem related to the one that was reported when using a currently supported version of Ubuntu? Please let us know if you do otherwise this report can be left to expire in approximately 60 days time.

Thank you for helping make Ubuntu better.

I'm closing this issue earlier than normal as I'm moving away from reviewing bug reports that have received little or no attention in recent times and there have been no comments to suggest that the reported problem is still an issue when using a currently supported release of Ubuntu.

Please feel to revert the status of this bug report to a previous status if this is still an issue while using a currently supported release of Ubuntu.
