Bug Description

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) amd64 _with_ the ppa:libreoffice/ppa repository/PPA enabled, and this issue is with the current packages (showing as 4.2.0.4 within LibreOffice and 1:4.2.0~rc4-0ubuntu1~precise4 as the package versions).

When I have a template in the Template Manager, clicking the Edit button should open it up for editing and close the Template Manager. Instead the template opens behind the template manager, but then LibreOffice hangs or crashes. I've had this issue both with a Writer (.ott file) template which I created myself, and with the Impress templates which are provided by default.

I've tried moving ~/.config/libreoffice such that LibreOffice can start with fresh user data, but this did not stop the problem occurring. Unfortunately starting LO in a terminal, with commands such as 'lowriter', 'libreoffice' or 'soffice', does not seem to produce any output I can paste here.

UPDATE: See my comment #2, where I note the problem also appears to effect the version of LibreOffice in the current 14.04 (trusty), as of the 08-Feb-2014 07:49 daily build.

UPDATE 2: As noted in my comments #3 and #4 I found this issue also effects LO on Windows, so went to report the bug upstream, only to find an existing report there, which I have now linked. That report seems to suggest the upcoming 4.2.1 release of LO should have fixed the issue.

A template file, the bug is not related to this one - LO crashes with any Writer template

Hi,

LO Version: 4.2.0.3
Build ID: c63c03decdf780d8fb80823950665b782ec9ecd0

crashes, when I try to open a template for editing from the Template manager.

To repeat:
If you do not have any templates installed, install the attached template and close LO

1. Start LO
2. Open the Template manager by clicking the Templates button
3. There, navigate to a template and activate it by single click. A toolbar appears.
4. Click the Edit button on the toolbar - LO crashes

OK in LO41

Tested only with Writer templates

I've just downloaded an Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) Daily Build (trusty-desktop-amd64.iso), dated 08-Feb-2014 07:49, to test for the same issue there, and it does indeed seem to be present.

I ran the daily build (in 'live' form, rather than installing) in a VirtualBox 4.3.6 virtual machine. As of this current build it has LibreOffice 4.2.0.4 (package version 1:4.2.0~rc4-0ubuntu1).

I tested for this issue, similarly to as I did on 12.04 (where 12.04 had a PPA enabled, unlike 14.04), by:
     1) Open any LibreOffice application (e.g. Writer, Impress, etc.)
     2) Open the Template Manager via
               File --> Templates --> Manage
     3) In the Template Manager window, click the Presentations tab
     4) Double-click on the 'Presentation Backgrounds' folder which should already be there
     5) Singe-click any of the templates shown then click the Edit button above
     6) Notice that all LibreOffice windows disappear.
It's noteworthy that in the case of 12.04+PPA, I also had the same problem with my own Writer template.

So to reiterate, this problem appears to affect the version of LibreOffice which is currently in 14.04 (trusty) builds, in addition to the version provided for 12.04 (precise) by the ppa:libreoffice/ppa PPA.

It breaks what appears to be the main way for a user to edit an existing template. The only workarounds I've found are either as described in my comment #1, or that after a first creating and saving a template it will appear in LibreOffice's recent documents from where it can still be opened for editing.

I'm about to install the current release of LibreOffice for Windows (from upstream http://www.libreoffice.org/ ) into a Windows XP VM, to see whether this issue exists there too.

As mentioned at the end of my last comment (#2), I've now tested for the same problem with (upstream) LibreOffice on Windows (a XP VM), and the same issue does occur, the only minor difference is the Recovery Manager launch after the crash - but generally its the same problem/symptom.

I'll try to file a bug on the upstream LibreOffice bug tracker, then try and link it from here.

Rob Parker, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is missing. In Trusty with the supported Ubuntu repository LibreOffice (not a PPA) please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. First, execute at a terminal:
cd /var/crash && sudo rm * ; sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y upgrade && sudo apt-get -y install libreoffice-dbg uno-libs3-dbg ure-dbg && sudo service apport start force_start=1

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now reproduce the crash, then open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'. If you run the command against the crash report and a window pops up asking you to report this, but then never opens a new report, you would be affected by https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/994921 . In order to WORKAROUND this, one would need to open the following file via a command line:
gksudo gedit /etc/apport/crashdb.conf

and comment out the line:
'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

by changing it to:
# 'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'],

Save, close, and try to file the crash report again via:
ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash

Please follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibreOfficeBugWrangling when you file this crash report so the necessary information is provided.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.

Thank you for your understanding.

It's been 3 months since that post, but LibreOffice 4.2.1 has still not been released.

Template editing is still crashing the current release version of LibreOffice. My version is 4.2.0.4, and a "Check for Updates" says "LibreOffice 4.2 is up to date". What's going on?

When is LibreOffice 4.2.1 planned to be released?

The Release Plan[1] seems to indicate that LibreOffice 4.2.1 was supposed to have been released by 13 April 2014 (one month ago).

The check for updates function does not work correctly.

Here are dates for the releases for 4.2 thus far, available here:
http://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

4.2.1.1 15-Apr-2014
4.2.3.3 17-Apr-2014
4.2.4.2 05-May-2014

Your best bet is to check the downloads on the project download page, here:
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/

But have a peak at the link to the Development Versions page from time to time.

The devs just gave this a tweak. Please try the "check for update" from Help menu.

Let us know how that goes and if Template Editing is in fact fixed for you.
