Bug Description

Calc frozen.

1. several data fields successfully edited

2. Cell A258 (with value ="1307" copied down into cell A259

3. Cell A259 edited to ="1310"

4. Cell A259 dragged down a further 5 cells to A264 wit the range of 6 cells highlighted.

Left the computer to get information about further edits - the range could have been highlighted for a few minutes.
Returned to try further edits to find it frozen.

Several issues reporting this problem relate to the bug reporting and will be the subject of further reports unless something goes wrong in the meantime (I could be called away) in summary:

Not knowing the package name - the HELP that told me to use ALT-F2 could usefully have told me the application package names current in the stack for me to choose from. My initial guess was not recognised after a long search!

Not knowing the name, I tried ubuntu-bug with no argument. Nothing.

After re-reading the help I used ps to find the PID (hardly a user facility!) & used the PID as the argument.

May I suggest a drop down package selector based on the applications using the largest open files in user space could help the reporting process.

Thanks

DrC

Whilst reporting these issues the application has come back to life - either unravelled itself or been kicked by something!

Slow learner! It has happened again with a selection of cells I 'Special Pasted' into a report on a second Calc window. Both windows froze up when I wen to save the second sheet.

Hmm ... Could be relevant - both target files were opened over a Samba connection. The client symptoms might be a consequence of an old Debian server.

Yes - the otherwise very reliable server also freezes when Calc locks up.

From a different workspace:

Could not display "smb://workgroup;cwsup@172.16.90.48/cwsup/".

Error: Invalid argument

Yes - seems to be LibreOffice-Samba. PDFs in the same folder open OF but when clicked on a calc document, after a long delay LibreOffice Calc returned invalid parameter. (screenshot)

Oops - PDFs open OK. OF was a mistype.

DrC, as a WORKAROUND, does the LibreOffice PPA allow you to open the file with an invalid parameter error via https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ppa ?

No problem accessing OOo text documents on a different SAMBA server (no calc documents there) so it really does seem to be a Calc-Samba issue. The original SAMBA server was quite badly bogged down in that other processes (eg Adobe-PDF accesses) were slow but all seems to be working OK now. Final test is to leave a calc window open & see what happenms ....

Thanks for the workaround but I'll stick with the released version for now (and on this 'production' system).

Here are the initial versions of files and the final versions.

I took the brief opportunity when all seemed to be working to restore VATform from the redone desktiop copy I made when it first looked like it was going bad. The copies you have are both from my Desktop.

There was temporary data loss on VATform - with neither archive manager nor LibreOffice finding anything in the server copy but stat reported 40 blocks via putty.

BTW both SAMBA servers are now returning invalid parameter when I try to 'Connect to server' so it looks like Ubuntu is hurting.

Could not display "smb://workgroup;cwsup@gateway/cwsup/".
Could not display "smb://workgroup;cwsup@172.16.90.48/cwsup/".
for both:
Error: Invalid argument
Please select another viewer and try again.

I'm running out of time here so I'm afraid since the task is sorted I have to go out. Unless there's something from you asking otherwise I will be rebooting Ubuntu on my return.

Thanks for all you guys do - hope I'm helping ...
