Ubuntu only provides a few. All of them should be available.

I've done this in debian, packaging the whole libreoffice-dictionaries, which provides quite some dictionaries (45 atm).

I'm now working on getting the ubuntu package in sync.

How are we going to handle locales for which there is more than one? For example, for gd, there's a smaller, unmaintained one and a bigger, maintained one. I mean, the choice is obvious but there needs to be a process of some sort to select amongst multiple dictionaries. I think en-GB similarly has a fork where someone has started maintaining again but I think only over on the LibreOffice extension site.

@Akerbeltz: If you by "smaller" mean the myspell-gd package, it should be automatically uninstalled when you install hunspell-gd (since myspell-gd is included in the "Conflicts" field in debian/control).

They're both for the same locale. It's not an uncommon scenario.

libreoffice-dictionaries in Debian, which is about to make it into Ubuntu, contains version 2.8 of the Scottish Gaelic spellchecker, which is the bigger, so the package maintainer has already made the choice. Or did I misunderstand you again? ;)

The bug description makes reference only to the OO extension site. But either way, whether we're talking LO or OO extention repos, the scenario remains that there may be more than one checker.

I may be misreading the bug slightly but it sounds like the idea is to provide the maximum number of hunspell dictionaries possible - which means we can't just rely on those which LO or OO bundle because not all spellcheckers are bundled with LO/OO, some devs prefer to just host them on the extension site and (presumably because it's easier to maintain) the version on the extension sites are often newer than those bundled with the product.

Please note that this bug report is 7 years old. Since then Ubuntu has switched from OO to LO. The sync of the current libreoffice-dictionaries version in Debian will be considered a fix of this bug.

I can't tell if there is a particular mechanism in place to handle the possible conflict you mention. I imagine that if you for example download hunspell-gd from the LO site, you'd better uninstall the hunspell-gd package before installing the other spellchecker. To the extent this is an issue, it's not a new issue triggered by the fix of this bug.

In general, the Ubuntu distribution can't take responsibility for software which users download from external sites.

Exactly.
I strongly believe the bundle made by libreoffice-dictionaries is quite a good one, and I'm not the only one thinking that.
Now, if there are two dictionaries for the same language we'll probably going to just pick the one in LO-dicts, since that's way easier to handle from a downstream point of view, if you disagree I'd just forward you to the libreoffice bug tracker.
If there is a missing one and you can provide/link it I'd just ask to the LO people to get it in the bundle.

If a dictionary in the bundle gets outdated just ask them to update it. I've already sent them some requests, and they are always responsive and helpful.
From my point of view, feel free to use me as a proxy for those requests, using this (once I get this package synced) or Debian's bug trackers.

Do I miss something you're trying to point out? I'm all ears about suggestions on handling this thing.
