The symptom is exactly the same in 8.10
the openRTSP doc says:
     Use the "-q" option to output the received data to 'stdout' in the form
     of an Apple QuickTime '.mov'-format file.
     Similarly, the "-4" option produces a '.mp4'-format (i.e., MPEG-4) file.
but
==> openRTSP -4 -p 30000 -w 800 -h 600 -f 25\
    rtsp://mafreebox.freebox.fr/fbxtv_pub/stream?namespace=1&service=204 > test.mp4
gives:
==>file test.mp4
   test.mp4: Apple QuickTime movie (unoptimized)

The issue that you reported should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD development release - Maverick Meerkat. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu.    I moved to Debian/Squeeze: the reported bug is still present.

   command line:
     openRTSP -4 -p 30000 -w 800 -h 600 -f 25 rtsp://..... > test.mp4
   result:
   test.mp4: Apple QuickTime movie (unoptimized)
