Reopening as this only seems to be fixed on non x86 archs.

This works fine in both my amd64 and i386 pbuilder chroots. Trying in a PPA to see if it's specific to the buildd systems.

It works on the new buildds running on a precise base system, and thus with newer kernels (3.2.0 vs. 2.6.24). Rather than hacking around at the package, I'm inclined to call that good enough.
