Bug Description

There is no way to focus libindicate based panel applets only using keyboard navigation. This is really really bad for a11y and should be fixed asap

Steps to reproduce:
  * switch to metacity
  * press Ctrl+Alt+Tab to focus top panel
  * press Tab to switch focus between applets in top panel

Current result
  Libindicate based applets can't focused using Tab (so you cant use Space or Return to activate and use them)

Expected result
  Libindicate based applet should act as other applets, respecting keyboard navigation rules for the sake of a11y

It seems there is a related bug, launchpad didn't show it when I reported this one.

Little update: it seems[1] that you can focus them, but
  * the focus ring isn't propertly showed
  * the activation key is crazy (left/righ arrow instead space/return)
  * the focus can't ungrabbed until you click

Plus the missing a11y unique name...

See also https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/228343 for issues with selecting the panel in the first place when using compiz

Note in addition: Once the indicator-applet-session or indicator-applet is selected in the panel, it swallows all keypresses it doesn't expect, including the Tab and Shift-Tab keys you'd expect to get out of it. This seems more consistent than what is described above

Sebastien, I'm not sure this is a true duplicate of bug 334544. That bug is only asking for an accelerator to focus indicator applet, this bug was more related to poor support for keyboard navigation in libindicator stuff...
If you want to keep bug 334544 as the one related to keyboard navigation issues for libindicator is fine for me, but then its summary should be changed.
