the 32bit version of libgsm1 package is broken on Ubuntu 12.04 64bit

Hello
Some software, like CrossOver relies of 32bit version of various libs to provide various functionality that Windows applications require.
Upon attempting to install libgsm1:i386 two things might happen:
1) the package manager will try to uninstall the 64bit version of this lib and others
2) a message like this gets printed on screen:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
