I have RVM installed, which might be interfering with the ruby install. On my system, "which ruby" yields
"/home/john/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p180/bin/ruby"

I am going to start the upgrade over again, but I would consider "ideal" behavior to be not crashing the upgrade and leaving the RVM settings/command paths intact.
