Bug Description

Binary package hint: rubygems1.8

The rubygems package modifies the source of /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rubygems/defaults.rb in order to force the install path of /var/lib/gems. Configuring the install path of rubygems is achievable using the GEM_HOME and GEM_PATH environment variables, and config options to the setup.rb script. One of these built-in mechanisms should be used to configure the install path of rubygems so that users who want to upgrade rubygems from upstream sources can do so in a way that is compatible with the Debian/Ubuntu configuration.
