Bug Description

The Validity Sensors Inc. VFS471 on my HP 8560w is not recognized by libfprint

138a:003c Validity Sensors, Inc. VFS471 Fingerprint Reader

Hoping that someday it will be supported.

Created attachment 52684
lsusb -v with 138a:003c Validity Sensors, Inc.

I have a HP EliteBook 8560w with a fingerprint reader.

The material information is in attachment.
The wiki of fprintd project is very small and I don't know how help this project for my fingerprint reader. If you know it, thank you to precise it. :)

fprintd doesn't recognise it because it's not supported by libfprint.

How I can help somebody to realize a driver for that ?

HP has a driver for this, but it is for SUSE Linux:

This package provides the Validity Fingerprint Reader Driver for Novell SUSE Linux SLED 11 SP1 for supported notebooks with supported operating systems.

I hope I can use this driver as soon as.

Same here -> ID 138a:003c Validity Sensors, Inc. VFS471 Fingerprint Reader
HP ProBook 4530s
Ubuntu 13.04
Can't we alter the Official suse driver to work with ubuntu?

lsusb recognizes the fingerprint reader as Bus 001 Device 003: ID 138a:003c Validity Sensors, Inc. VFS471 Fingerprint Reader .

Fingerprint GUI 1.05 sadly does not recognize any readers .

I have attempted to run Wireshark to sniff the USB traffic for this device under Windows, but the installer for the fingerprint software will not install on a Windos Virtual machine -- it complains that I should only be installing it on an authorised HP platform. I turfed the Windows installation a while back, so I don't have one.

CrimInalA (bimbambols) wrote :

By searching the net i found another Driver version (RPM format) .
Maybe this can help to get the VFS471 to work on ubuntu ?

Zbook 17 (successor of Elitebook)

~$ lsusb | grep Validity
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 138a:003f Validity Sensors, Inc.

Device is 003f instead of 003c, but the problem is the same.
Validity fingerprint reader does not work in Ubuntu neither 12.04 nor 14.04

I am able to sniff USB logs for this device, will this be useful to anybody?

Same here: 138a:003c not supported. It is an HP 6460b .
Should this bug not be changed into a feature request?

I can confirm that the "Bus 001 Device 005: ID 138a:003f Validity Sensors, Inc." device is not working on Ubuntu 14.04 (HP EliteBook 840 G2). I would really like to see this device working properly...

Well, I better jump on the bandwagon also.

I would also like my 138a:003c Validity to work with Ubuntu Xenial. It's an hp 2560p.

Is there any window for getting this resolved?

I have the HP Probook 4230s with this fingerprint sensor and am moving away from Windows 10 to Ubuntu. I have the same issue. No drivers available. I found 32-bit .rpm drivers from HP site. But it wont work on Ubuntu 16.04 64bit even after converting it with alien.

I got this Validity fingerprint reader working on Ubuntu 16.04 x64 following this guide: https://askubuntu.com/questions/385372/vfs-495-finger-print-reader-not-working-in-ubuntu/924475#924475
basically fixing some minor issues and using files from this original tutorial: https://balintbanyasz.wordpress.com/2015/03/27/get-validity-vfs-495-fingerprint-reader-working-in-ubuntu-14-04/

The tutorial is for VFS495 (138a:003f), but it applies too for VFS471 (138a:003c, mine) and likely for VFS491 (138a:003d).
