thanks for the report, does the same happens with totem? which kind of files are you trying to reproduce (wav,mp3,ogg,etc)? does changing the default device at the sound properties fixes the issue? are you using the crossfading backend?, thanks.

Maybe it's not the rhythmbox bug, because when i'm trying to play music using Amarok it just freezes (and after it i can close it only by "kill" command) It's reproduces with any MP3s i have. Maybe it's problem with mp3 codec? BTW, when i open last.fm it plays music without problem.

I'm try to change sound properties, as you suggest, but without success.

Hi splix. Often this can occur after playing a flash video; did this occur? If you have a browser such as Firefox open, close it, restart rhythmbox, and try playing again. If flash was the issue, it should work now.

Yes, thank you very much, it'd fixed my problem.
I've restarted firefox and it's playing music now. Thank you very much, it's annoying me for a long time, and now i know what to do at this situation.

Thanks splix for your feedback! I will move this to libflashsupport. I feel like this should be a dupe, I have seen lots of these, but I can't find one at the moment.

I have the same problem on two machines running ubuntu 8.04 with different sound cards, etc.

It looks like that if an application uses audio no other can use it until that application is closed. I've tryied it with rhythmbox + flash , rhythmbox + skype , skype + flash , etc

Hello ,
I'm having the same issue. (I thought I was alone ;-)
I use Firefox (last version) in Ubuntu Hardy + Exaile + VLC
My sound card is integrated in the motherboard (NVIDIA nForce2 chipset + AMD Athlon XP 2600+)

Test case Number 1 :
Using Firefox, I go on a WebSite that will "catch" my sound.
Then trying to read a multimedia file :
VLC (video): No sound (video OK)
Totem (video): No sound (video OK)
MPlayer Movie Player (video): No Play (freeze at first frame)
Audacious (music): Freeze and crash and trying to play music
Exaile (music): try to play music but don t go further than 0 sec. (don t play music)
Banshee (music): plays music OK
RythmBox (music): plays music OK
Listen (music): plays music OK
+ Firefox Sound OK (Youtube for instance)

Then stopping Firefox
VLC (video): No sound (video OK)
Totem (video): No sound (video OK)
MPlayer Movie Player (video): No Play (freeze at first frame)
Audacious (music): plays music OK
Exaile (music): plays music OK

Sometimes, When I quit Firefox , the process is still running , so I have (through System Monitor) to Kill the process, before playing any type of multimedia files.

Test case Number 2 :
It happened the contrary :
Exaile Get the sound.
And I was not able to get any sound into Firefox !

What is confused is that all hardware seem to work.
(if I use either Firefox or multimedia player)
But both are not compatible, and the Sound manager (System>Preferences) tells me all is OK. and the test and report Hardware says all is OK too.
:'(

Thanks guys for your support / questions / remarks ...
Cheers
Chris.

Just wondering, any update on this bug? I know this bug does not affect 8.10, although using 8.10 breaks other things on my system, so I have downgraded to 8.04 again. Still no bugfix?

I have the same problem, using 8.04.

After playing a Flash video in firefox or totem, no audio in rhythmbox. Have to restart rhythmbox to get audio again. Also seen it vice versa i.e. have to restart firefox after playing audio in rhythmbox in order to get audio again in firefox.

I just installed the libflashsupport package and it fixed the problem! Somehow when this bug was moved from rhythmbox to libflashsupport I didn't notice that libflashsupport was a package that I didn't have installed.

Okay, Flash 10 should have solved this issue starting in Intrepid I believe and certainly Jaunty. If anyone is experiencing issues with sound related to Flash in Jaunty or newer, that is a new bug to file, though feel free to link it here :)

I have exactly the same issues under Jaunty x86_64. Skype and Flashplayer still seem to fight each other...
I tried with skype_static OSS, but whenever flash runs a movie (e.g. under youtube) no sound for skype is available any more.
When I use skype non static and choose pulse-audio as oudi sources in skype preferences the system is quite unstable see -> https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/417659

I would be so happy when this could be finalized solved.

cheers,
cue
