According to description the bug affects gnome-control-center instead of gnome-system-monitor. I'm changing the package.

Jeremy did you upload your update to show the entry in the startup applications as a workaround? That's probably a candidate for a sru now rather than upload but probably still worth discussing

Hello Séverin, or anyone else affected,

Accepted libcanberra into oneiric-proposed, the package will build now and be available in a few hours. Please test and give feedback here. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you in advance!

I can confirm that the UI for the login sound is back in "Startup Applications Preferences". Thanks!

However, I don't hear anything even when it's enabled. Running

  /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" --description="GNOME Login"

from a terminal window results in the error message "Failed to play sound: File or data not found".

Not that I care too much, considering that I don't want to hear it anyway. ;-)

I confirm the "GNOME login sound" entry has been added to startup applications.

But, as mentionned, this can only be considered as a workaround. I think users are expecting to find this sound-related setting in the sound preferences menu.

Gunnar, your command to play the login sound still works here.

Séverin, you're welcome to open a new bug for Precise to move this option to System Settings>Sound. Precise will probably have the login sound disabled by default though.

I just noticed that it works for me within a guest session, where the "Startup Applications" tool is useless by design...

At http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1566078 you find some guidance on how you can customize the guest session feature (which is designed to start with default settings), and disabling the login sound is one of the things shown.
