Is this from a fresh install of 9.10? What audio backends for libcanberra
are installed?

This is a fresh install from the text-based installer of 9.10.
Not sure how to tell what audio backends for libcanberra are installed.
libcanberra-pulse is installed if that's what you mean.

I suspect that you're just hitting the watermark instability that
seems to affect some drivers.

I also did a clean install of 9.10 and am getting the exact same results. You note a problem with the drivers, could you please specify?

One more thing, I'd just like to say that this problem was not present in Jaunty. The bug doesn't effect any thing other than the 'smoothness' of log in. It just seems to be a bit of a shame after all the effort put into to the look and feel of the karmic login, that the final stage of the login spoils it a bit. Its still beautiful though!

I have been getting the same stuttering login on my Thinkpad R50e ever since I did a fresh install of Karmic. libcanberra-pulse is installed.

And by the way, just out of curiosity: I remember that at logout/shutdown/restart under Jaunty I got that sort of echoed/reverbered voice saying "Aah!" (should be a keyboard), but haven't heard it in Karmic anymore. Since I haven't read around about its suppression, am I the only one to have lost it, or is it somehow related to this audio problem? Thanks!

I also can confirm this on a fresh karmic install on a Compaq D510 SFF.

Confirmed on an MSI U120

Audio WAS working until the update.

EVERYTHING that other people suggest trying (and claim to work) do not work.... I just checked that libcanberra-pulse is installed

Why cant they just release an update that fixes this? And shouldn't this sorta thing be tested before its released to the update pool? I mean, I know there are lots of diff hardware combos, but it looks like thousands and thousands of people have the same problem...

kthxbai2u, that looks like a hardware problem. Please file a bug report against linux and try enabling position_fix=1 by appending it to the options snd-hda-intel line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
