Bug Description

after installing the OS the welcome chime is to loud, (I look for mute frantically)

I think the welcome tune should be shortened and made to be 1/2 the volume. Also it would be helpful if the default volume level was not set to MAX on first boot. (my speaker system is loud) and this is disruptive in the public / classroom.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in pulseaudio.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

A few people have reported their first experience with Ubuntu to be a literal blowing out of speakers due to the login sound. We really should default to a lower volume.

gdm doesn't set the volume level, the bug there should be reassign to alsa or some sound stack component

I confirm this, having witnessed three people (plus me) being inconvenienced by the volume level on five different laptops.

Bug is more than 2 years, old, "confirmed", really annoying, probably affecting much more people than those who took the time to report it, probably easy checking and fixing, still "undecided" and "unassigned". So what ? Should we start torturing kitten until somebody puts a helping hand on it ?

Swâmi, if this is so unbearable remember you can always get a full refund for your Ubuntu.

In Oneiric this seems to go in the wrong direction, i.e. it seems to be more difficult for those (most users?) who don't like the login sound to figure out how to disable it. In an attempt to prevent that, I posted a message to the ubuntu-desktop mailing list:

Your contributions to that thread might make a difference. ;-)
