If it happens again I will, but I don't know how to reproduce it or if
I want to spend the time reproducing it. It crashed and I sent the
automatic crash report. The crash happened the day all those other
crashes were happening after the buggy hardy update. It could
be that the revisions took care of it. I will reboot several times today
to see if it happens again.

It is easy to reproduce, just keep pressing ctrl+alt+backspace until a message display warning about couldn't initialize gnome-settings-daemon, so after reboot apport finish the job.

I to just had the whole X display just poof ... it never crashed, but it just seemingly just instantly restarted when I attempted to maximize a window. Bug buddy said it was going to report the same exact title as this bug. So I'm just voicing that I had the same problem.

i was away some time and when i came back i couldn't use the system - the screen was auto-faded to black and didn't come back even after some key spamming and switching to another tty and back. i ctrl-atl-del'ed and recieved the crash report

Same here - no panels at all (top or bottom) in Gnome. Ctrl-Alt-Backspaced several times, even started X from terminal session and could not get panels to reload. Restarted and panels are now present.
