update-manager aborts - pre-removal script return error exit status

Binary package hint: update-manager

Updating a 6.06 desktop over the network to 6.10 using update-manager -c.
Was logged in with just the update manager and gnome-terminal running
in a standard gnome login (had a cpu freq panel app running).

Got a "Could not install '/var/cache/apt/archives/lcd4linux_0.10.0+cvs20060825-1_i386.deb' error dialog with the following text description and detail:

The upgrade aborts now. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.

this is a duplicate (or better a consequence) of bug #68686.
