Could you elaborate what you mean here? Did you manually install the Oneiric package in an older Ubuntu, or am I misunderstanding you? It seems that the winff package is hit by this too: bug 876739.

I'm not adding any package sources. I used the official meta-package lazarus and lazarus-0.9.30 (not at the same time of course)
Since Lazarus is using GTK, i assume it has something to do with the upgrade to gnome3. I did not experience this bug in older versions of ubuntu.

@Carli,

lazarus-0.9.30 does not exist in older versions of Ubuntu. So how do you get that version in your older Ubuntu version?

I heard from one of upstream winff that he has also similar problems as you describe, and he is using Kubuntu, so I don't think it is GTK. He compiled the IDE against the Qt widgetset and found that it ran much smoother afterwards, so my guess would be that there is a problem with the GTK2 widgetset.

The bug appears on both, lazarus and lazarus-0.9.30
And yes, I assume its a problem with the gtk2 widgetset. It was broken since the small scrollbars were introduced in ubuntu.

Sorry, I might still not understand you, but aren't lazarus and lazarus-0.9.30 actually the same? lazarus is an empty package that is just there to allow you to always have the latest version. I.e. if you want you can keep the old version installed when you update, just so you can use both versions. But if you didn't make precautions, in your case there is no difference.

Files in package lazarus (version 0.9.30-2build1):
/.
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/lazarus
/usr/share/doc/lazarus/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/lazarus/copyright

lazarus is the meta package for the older lazarus 0.9.28.2 while lazarus-0.9.30 is the meta package for a newer version.

Are you sure? I look at: http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/lazarus and see that lazarus depends on lazarus-0.9.30.

I am still wondering how you got lazarus-0.9.30 on your older Ubuntu version as well. I think it is important to know what you tested, and what you say that works. I suspect there is something wrong with lazarus-0.9.30 and it's gtk widgetset, but then running lazarus-0.9.30 on older ubuntu versions should experience the same problem. The other way around, if it is build in, also lazarus-0.9.28 should run without problem on Oneiric. Your story says something else, but I am not sure that I share your conclusion.

This Bug is related to the new scrollbars hack in ubuntu.
As i heard from other Lazarus users, lazarus works fine on gnome3+debian, so please check what exactly went wrong when introducing the thin scroll bars.

I found a workaround:

export LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0
lazarus-ide

I have the same problems. Ubuntu 11.10 amd64. Lazarus 0.9.30.
Before that I was on Lucid Lynx (LTS), and lazarus worked well. But now this bug doesn't allow me to code.

Paul
I think Carli installed lazarus manually from tarballs, as I did.

Carli
Thank you! Your workaround works well.

Same problem with dialogs in Lazarus 0.9.30.2.
Same workaround works. (thanks you, Carli).

I am closing this bug because,
1) the issue was related to unity
2) the issue was reported against an Ubuntu version that is not supported anymore
3) I assume unity got improved.
