Bug Description

Binary package hint: lazarus

I downloaded the lazarus package from packages.ubuntu.com. The package installer opened up and displayed the error message "Dependency is not satisfiable: libc6"

I verified that libc6 is installed and is the latest version.

Note that this means that lazarus can't be installed!

Hi, thanks for your bug report. Which version of Ubuntu are you running, and why did you download the package from packages.ubuntu.com instead of installing from synaptic/apt-get/etc. ? Does it work if you do that instead?

First, thanks so much for responding, I appreciate that. First let me
say that traditionally, I've been a Fedora user, a Mac user, and Windows
user, and have had Lazarus running on all those platforms.
I just recently decided to take a look at the Ubuntu distro as it's
clearly becoming very popular for end users. So I installed the new 7.04
(Feisty Fawn) to play with it, updated it to make sure I was current,
etc.

I did try using the Synaptic Package Manager but it didn't seem to know
about Lazarus, at least not out of the box. So I figured I would need to
find the right repository. So I did a search for "Lazarus Ubuntu" and
that's how I ended up on that packages.ubuntu.com page. There was a
download link right there, and some package manager opened automatically
to install it....my sense is that that SHOULD have worked, otherwise why
would the package be available on the Ubuntu site?

If I can figure out (or perhaps you can tell me) how to get Lazarus via
Synaptic, I'll certainly try that....but I would still make the point
that if a package is available on the Ubuntu site and downloaded to a
Ubuntu distro, it ought to just automagically work (grin)

Take care,
David

Hello again. It seems the package you downloaded was for the development version of Ubuntu (gutsy gibbon) so it's not really supported on Ubuntu 7.04, which is why I'll be closing this bug. You're welcome to file another bug asking for the lazarus package to be backported to 7.04, though I'm not sure what their policies about backporting packages are.

Backported? I thought 7.04 was the latest version....if there's a newer
version of Ubuntu, I'm happy to use that instead

7.04 is the latest stable version of Ubuntu but gutsy gibbon is the unstable development version which is scheduled for release as 7.10 in October. It is possible to upgrade to gutsy gibbon but I would strongly advise against it at this early stage of development.

So are you saying that Lazarus was only made available for this new
development version and was not available for earlier versions? (at
least in package form?)

That's correct. More accurately, it was only recently added to Debian Sid which Ubuntu pulls most of its original packages from. So it only got added in time to be synced into gutsy gibbon.
