Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-desktop

I don't know where to start. The problem is so massive, that my only hope is that you'll check my attached files, localise the problem and mark it as critical.

The problem looks simple here! KDE 4.1.2 just won't work! It's slow, it's unstable, it crashes, it's applications fail to start...

I tried the following solutions: 1) Deleted the .kde folder, then started KDE again. Didn't work. 2) Turned off special effects of KWin desktop. Didn't help.

I'm attaching the following files:

xorg.conf

So, what exactly is wrong? What is crashing?

Hmmm... there are a lot of things that go wrong.

1. The new kickoff menu. The search function causes the whole desktop to crash

2. Some applications fail to start - Kopete for example.

3. Speed! Speed speed!

I need to switch back to KDE... wait, because I noted a problematic process.

Hmmm... Take a look of this file...

It shows all of my processes running. So... we have a problematic one. At first I thought we have a bug in the xorg-intel package, but I realised that it cannot be the case, because GNOME works fine.

What do you mean by crash? You get a window saying. "Sorry, this program crashed" or something?

Kopete works just fine here, btw. That would be a separate bug anyway. It's also possible that the slowness could be the fault of the Intel video driver.

Yeah...

But it could be also a problem related to my system settings, as well. I removed the scim library, kdeedu programs and did an apt-get autoremove. The system works fine now.

Oh yes, scim could definitely cause all those issues.

The culprit is most likely skim. Please purge the skim package (yes, with 'k') from your system and see if the problem goes away. The reason is that skim was installed by default, but has not been ported to qt4 yet. Therefor it causes problems like this in a qt4 environment.
