Missing letters in all applications after Plasma crash

After the Plasma 5 panel crashed* many letters in all applications checked (Firefox, Thunderbird) disappeared. In some cases, the drop shadows of letters did appear, but the letter above did not. I'll attach screenshots.

Distro: Kubuntu 15.10

* The Plasma 5 panel crashed after clicking the Open All arrow on the System Tray. The KDE bug reporting wizard did not find debug symbols to install so I did not report it.

Kernel: 4.4.0-16-generic x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: KDE Plasma 5.5.4
           Distro: Ubuntu 16.04 xenial

And also affects all of my family's Ubuntu systems running on HP Streams. This is a critical bug.

Switching to DRI3 fixes the problem for me (intel gpu).
