Bug Description

GCC is not installed by default in Kubuntu but is in Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu and Ubuntu Gnome.

It's needed to install virtualbox guest additions. I had to install build-essential.

I mean when you install virtualbox guest additions by doing "VirtualBox -> Devices -> Insert Guest Additions -> VBoxLinuxAdditions.run".

GCC is a compiler. It's not meant to be delivered with a fresh system.

I know that GCC is a compiler but usually when I install a linux distro (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Manjaro) on VirtualBox I have no problem to install virtualbox guest additions.

But on Kubuntu 15.10 x64 Alpha 2 VirtualBox Guest Additions says that it can't be installed because GCC is not installed.

For as long as I remember I have always had to install gcc for guest additions.

I just tried Kubuntu 15.04 and you are right gcc is not installed. Maybe it was on Netrunner that I didn't need to install gcc.
I tried Ubuntu and gcc, and everything VirtualBox Guest Additions need if it need something else, is installed by default.

Maybe it's a good idea to provide gcc (and everything VirtualBox Guest Additions need if it need something else) by default to ease the installation in a VM ?

I tested in Ubuntu Gnome 15.04 and like in Ubuntu I can install VirtualBox Guest Additions out of the box.

So, do you think it's possible to add the necessary packages, like GCC, on the ISO, to install VirtualBox Guest Addition out of the box ?
Since Ubuntu and others flavours provide it I don't see what prevents us to do it.

So yeah, it is true that it is installed on all of the above. And through further investigation it is a matter of our ISO is already oversized due to the sheer size of KDE. I can't promise that we can get this one there as gcc does not come alone and needs more dependencies. So yeah this is a wishlist/opinion. Sorry.

The ISO is already a lot bigger than a CD (anybody still use this ?), a lot smaller than a DVD (anybody still use this too ?) and a lot smaller than the smallest USB stick needed (2GB). So the ISO size can't be a problem to integrate GCC.

In term of user experience it will ease a lot the installation of VirtualBox Guest Addition that allow, for exemple, to increase the output resolution (640x480 to whatever you need like 1920x1080) and make testing of Kubuntu a lot more enjoyable. And God know that Kubuntu need better press.

Thank you for considering it.

It's not difficult to install VirtualBox in Ubuntu. Following their manual. all you need to do is to install DKMS and that drags in the required dependencies. If taking the most current version from the software-provider.

If taking the version from the Ubuntu-repositories, all dependencies should be settled. – If NOT please consider reporting against the relevant packages.

That's not the point. The point is that the softs that virtualbox guest additions need are not installed by default in Kubuntu whereas they are in others Ubuntu flavor. There is no real reason behind this and the pre-installation of these softs make the installation of virtualbox guest additions straightforward.
