Bug Description

With my daily updates (apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade) of today (July 4th) I lost KDE as choice on the authentication applet (pops up after restart).
The upgrade itself went smoothly, no errors reported, and I was asked to reboot (it changed a number of KDE-packages and created a new initramfs).
I used to have a choice of KDE and fluxbox; today after that otherwise successful upgrade the only choice left was fluxbox.
I did not see any package being uninstalled. My list of
dpkg -l | grep kde
is attached.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Release: 14.04
with daily update//upgrade

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1337960/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Workaround:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall kubuntu-desktop

Still, the bug IS valid, since I am not the only one (see forum), and this isn't the first time (for me).
I have never asked for the kubuntu-desktop to be removed (then the everything in my previous attachment ought to have gone). What the command above did, was an installation of 4 packages altogether (sorry, I don't remember all 4, one was kde-artwork) of around 17 MB.

There is supposedly a bug that either removes a few important packages, or simply removes KDE (plasma) from the list of available desktop environments (DEs).
The hackish solution would be a wrapper that checks at the end of an 'upgrade', if the available and installed DEs are actually available to the display manager (I have no clue which one is being used here; earlier it was kdm, but it has been replaced by some earlier 6-monthly system upgrade).
