Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-kde4-desktop

After the upgrade to hardy today my KDE 4 is much slower. This only happens if something is loaded, which has not been loaded yet. E.g. opening a new programm takes very long or when the open file dialog is opened in a running program.

I had no problems with this when I used gutsy and KDE 4.

Btw I use amd64

As this bug report is a little bit fuzzy: pls tell me the information you need.

P.S.: The upgrade to hardy was perfect. Great job!

I just tested around a little bit:
If I start a KDE 4 application from a konsole I see the following error messages:
Cannot establish the socket connection...
Failed to initialize scim
Failed to allocate the agent. Exitting...
Cannot establish the socket connection...
Failed to initialize scim
Failed to allocate the agent. Exitting...
Failed to invoking the agent: No such file or directory
Cannot launch the agent
The messenger is now down

I also noticed that a programm called scim-bridge appears in top as soon as I start an application and that the application does not do anything (the "slow" thing) as long as scim-bridge is running. I don't know what scim-bridge does and I don't know if this is really related, but somehow I guess so ;-)

I'll try to remove scim-bridge to see if this solves the problem.

Yes it seems that removing scim-bridge-agent, scim-bridge-agent-qt and scim-bridge-agent-qt4 solved the problem. Apps are starting fast again and the error messages in the comment above are not shown again.

A friend of mine had the same problem and on his system removing those packages solved the problem, too.

I also want to add that I did not upgrade to Hardy. This was happening on a fresh install of the daily build from 3/18/08. Also running AMD64.

Confirming that too.

But an other workaround:
Installing the "scim" package, which installed the "im-switch" package.

This also removes the crash each time kdm4 gets loaded.

So it seams that it fixes some dependency.

Better workaround indeed.

Thanks a lot.

I had the same issue in KDE3.5.9 , Hardy beta, all updates installed. I tested the first workaround (removing al scim related packages) and the effects were immediate).

Another piece of information which may be relevant: when I did have the problem, the only apps that did start flawlessly here, were KDE4 programs, like LyX and the KDE4 version of Konqueror.

ATM, I am trying out Martin's workaround. I'll get back to confirm whether it worked for me as well.

The problem is in scim-bridge-client-qt4, if you do not have scim installed it delays applications starting up by several seconds while it tries and fails to connect. If you do it insists on running scim even when you don't need it and when quitting it just restarts. scim-bridge-client-qt (qt3) and scim-bridge-client-gtk have no such problems.

I've removed scim-bridge-client-qt4 from the kubuntu-kde4 seed for now.

I justed wanted to submit a bug, but I saw this one. The workaround works for me.

I noticed it when trying to use the repository manager in Adept manager. When clicking on e.g. the pulldown-menu with the servers; my system locked up for 15 secs. (mouse was still working). The system was not really locked up, because the background processes were still running. I found these errors in my syslog:

----------------------------------------------------------
Apr 20 17:06:49 k-uptown scim-bridge: Cannot establish the socket connection...
Apr 20 17:06:49 k-uptown scim-bridge: Failed to initialize scim

I also saw this error in the Xorg.0.log:

----------------------------------------------------------
(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/wacom
        No such file or directory.
Error opening /dev/input/wacom : Success

I don't have a wacom tablet off course, but maybe its related.

Unfortunately, the above workarounds were not sufficient so I had to re-install the files below and all is working smoothly.

As a reminder I upgraded Kubuntu from Gutsy Gibbon to Hardy Heron.

Hello Zhengpeng (Freeflying):

Could you please help look at this bug report? Thanks.

To all:

So, just to confirm: You mean that installing "skim" is not enough, and "scim" is also needed? Or is "skim" not even installed on your systems? Thanks!

Ok, that patch does NOT work as expected. popen attempts to open a 'sh' to run skim in. You cannot do that as scim is an X application, and it won't run. Therefore, since the patch only checks for the open file handle (which always succeeds on ubuntu), this patch does nothing useful.

Needs to be re-written.

I have installed kubuntu-desktop (in Intrepid) and both scim-bridge-client-qt4 and scim-bridge-client-qt were installed (version 0.4.14-2ubuntu2). As a result I can reproduce the problem described in this bug report.

Here is what happens when I try to launch a program:
:~$ konqueror
/usr/bin/scim
Failed to open the panel socket
Failed to open the panel socket
Failed to open the panel socket
Failed to open the panel socket
Failed to open the panel socket
Failed to open the panel socket
Failed to open the panel socket
Failed to open the panel socket
Failed to open the panel socket
Failed to open the panel socket
Failed to allocate the agent. Exitting...
Failed to invoking the agent: No such file or directory
Cannot launch the agent

Then the program shows up but it takes a while.

Solved the issue after completely removing the scim and skim packages.

Thus it is worth noticing that the SCIM processes are extremely memory hungry. After removing them I saved 600 MB of memory !!!

Intrepid Ibex should not install scim and skim by default even when upgrading from Hardy.
