Having /usr hidden is not a nice thing to do to firefox users.
In firefox, when you select what application you want to use to open a certain
filetype, you'll have to browse to find the binary.
With /usr hidden users get stuck and give up.
To reproduce:
Open firefox
Edit -> Preferences -> Content -> File Types ->
Manage -> Select a filetype -> Change action.. -> Open them with this application -> File system
You will now see that only /home and /media is shown.

I am aware of the 'Type a filename' in the upper left corner.
I don't think clicking that and typing the location is friendly to new users.
