Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-default-settings

I have installed Kubuntu Jaunty Alpha 5 and have reviewed default settings that are used in KDE4/Plasma. This is the list of settings that in my opinion should be considered to have default configuration changed from kubuntu-default-settings.

1. System Settings
GTK Style:
- I think we should have "Use my KDE fonts for GTK application" by default.

Desktop Effects:
- I thought this is auto enabled? On this laptop with Intel 4500 card it is not.

2. Plasma/Panel
- kickoff: should we enable change on hover?
- pager: should we show icons in 1 row (better for horizontal panel)?
- pager: should we enable icons by default?
- digital clock: year is not that useful, I would replace if with weekday

This probably needs usability review/feedback and/or discussion on Kubuntu meeting.

Changed in kubuntu-default-settings:
milestone: none → ubuntu-9.04-beta

Fine by me.. I thought this was already enabled

"Desktop Effects: - I thought this is auto enabled? On this laptop with Intel 4500 card it is not."
Should all desktop effects be enabled? It would probably depend greatly on hardware, and I don't know what the common hardware spec is. Probably can be decided at a meeting.

"kickoff: should we enable change on hover?"
No, the hover control is something we've been customizing for the past two releases. It's too weird that half the controls are hover and the other half require clicking, so they should all be set to click.

"pager: should we show icons in 1 row (better for horizontal panel)?, pager: should we enable icons by default?"
I don't have an opinion otherwise, maybe another thing to discuss in the meeting.

"digital clock: year is not that useful, I would replace if with weekday"
Sure, makes sense to me.

Desktop effects have been on by default since Intrepid. If the hardware cannot handle them they are turned off. (We use compiz's blacklist.) Generally any card that supports desktop effects can run them well.

KDE fonts AND KDE style.
gtk-qt-engine is installed by default, but it's not working because libbonoboui2.0 is not installed by default

see : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk-qt-engine/+bug/326648

many user will install install firefox and will find that it looks awful. They won't find a way to make it look better in systemsettings because "use kde style in gtk application" is already enabled, but not working !

Which is why we're booting gtk-qt-engine and using gtk2-engines-qtcurve instead: bug 342379

GTK fixed, Desktop Effects affecting compiz blacklist, Kickoff rejected, digital clock not applying (enhanced localization support makes KDE use whatever is most common for the locale, in case of en_US it would be "Fri, 3 Jul" it seems), I don't think the pager should be 1 row since it wastes more space on the already bloated panel, no clue what icons by default does, it does not seem to do anything here :P

Clearly most of the things are fixed.
And here I go: closing because this bug should be split into multiple reports in the first place. You darn devs should get a bug report crash course :P
