Bug Description

Binary package hint: kde4

No KDE4 apps will start, including KWord, Knetwalk, and KDE4 itself. All of these worked before a recent upgrade, and they all work (or their equivalents under KDE3)

trying to run knetwalk gives the following error:

anschel:~% /usr/lib/kde4/bin/knetwalk
Fatal error: you need to have a KComponentData object before
you do anything that requires it! Examples of this are config
objects, standard directories or translations.
zsh: abort (core dumped) /usr/lib/kde4/bin/knetwalk

and kword:

anschel:~% kword-kde4
Fatal error: you need to have a KComponentData object before
you do anything that requires it! Examples of this are config
objects, standard directories or translations.
Aborted (core dumped)

(this is not a zsh error, i get the same error with bash)

how do i find the core dump?

This is not a qt4-x11 issue. The problem is due to a crack upload of the kubuntu-default-settings package. To fix this issue, simply remove /etc/kde4rc, log off and then back on. Everything will work as planned.

The fix has also been released with an updated kubuntu-default-setting package that removes the kde4 parts from the file for the time being.

I come from #193525. Deleting /etc/kde4rc did it for me. Thanks!!
