Bug Description

Testing 20.04 daily image (20200312). Booted LiveUSB to Live desktop. Executed KSystemLog from start->applications->system. The window opened off the right side of the screen. The only reason I saw it was because I clicked the item on the taskbar at the bottom of the desktop. That showed it travelling from the minimized state to the seeming larger desktop extending off the right side of my screen.

It seemed like it was opening to a 2nd desktop on the right side (but, as far as I know, there is no 2nd desktop). Or, it seemed like it was acting as if I had an external monitor attached to this laptop, extending the screen further to the right.

As I typed the above I had the idea to look at settings->display and monitor. It thinks there is a 2nd monitor. It shows "Laptop screen" and "VGA-1-2" next to it.

This is an old Del XPS L502X (i7-1630QM; Nvidia GT540M; Intel Centrino 6230).

Update: This seems to be specific to the old Dell XPS L502X laptop. I booted the next daily image (20200313) on a new Asus Ryzen 5/Vega 8 laptop, and Kubuntu didn't detect an external monitor. (I booted that daily on the L502X and it again believed there is a VGA screen next to the laptop screen.).

I will test some other older laptops (over the next few days) and update this bug report. Maybe it's something specific to this Dell XPS laptop. Maybe it's not a big problem.

Update: I am seeing this same mistaken external monitor on an older Dell XPS 501X[1] laptop too. Opening any application (System Settings; Konsole) opens the window off the right-hand side of the laptop's screen. I have to right click the taskbar and choose to move the window from there.

Those are the only two laptops I've seen this behavior. (Dell XPS 502x and 501x). I don't see anything in the bios or inxi -Fxrz output which would suggest there is a 2nd display active. (Both have the latest bios.).

I do not see the behavior when I boot other *buntu Live desktops. These are old machines (2010-2014). It may not be important to fix it. (The solution might be to go into System Settings, Hardware, Display, and turn off the erroneous external monitor.).

If there is any more info or testing I can provide, I will.
