Bug Description

On the dapper default ksplash using 1024x768 resolution, the progress icons are so close to each other that some part of the icons are not displayed. This doesn't look good at all.

do you still get this with up to date dapper?

yes!

I purged kubuntu-default-settings and it is still happenning.........
The issue seems to be in /usr/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/kubuntu/Theme.rc

Line 16, 17, 18, there is an option "Base Resolution"....... set to 1920x1200
...
Is it normal...???

I forgot to mention that I use xinerama extension with the nvidia prop driver........

OK I got it.
This seems to be due to the Xinerama (I mean TwinView...) config.
I just turned the Twin View option off, and the ksplash icons look just fine...

The only thing that helped was to reduce the icon size in
/usr/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/kubuntu/Theme.rc
     14 IconSetSize = 16

So that they don't collide ....

It's 1:40, I'm going to bed !

Hi, I've similar issues on my dual screen (not on my laptop). I use too nvidia drivers, with twinview.

This still seems to be flagged unconfirmed... so bump.

I'm experiencing the same behaviour with TwinView. I've attached a screenshot.

I reported the same thing some time ago:

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/kubuntu-default-settings/+bug/43444

It still happens with the latest Edgy packages, but only with Xinerama active (if Xinerama is disabled or there is just one screen everything works fine).

I too can confirm this. Twinview with the 'nvidia' driver.

Can anyone confirm that anything of this sort of nature happens on standard Ubuntu, running Gnome?

I don't recall having any issues with the GNOME splash screen. I'm pretty sure this is an issue with the Moodin KSplash engine, which GNOME doesn't use. The package for Moodin is ksplash-engine-moodin, and here's the KDE-Look.org page:

I'm not using my xinerama machine hardly at all anymore, but can anyone still confirm this bug in feisty?

I've not yet upgraded my workstation to feisty, but I will soon. I will post here the result :-)

Well, I'm now on Kubuntu feisty since yersteday. At morning, the ksplash is better : there is no more black background behind icons, but they are still too close to each other. But, it's somewhat better :-)

Would you happen to be able to post screenshots? I haven't gotten around to upgrading to Feisty yet but I plan to do it soon, though I won't be able to test the bug again.

Yep, exactly what I was seeing. I suspect that there's some code in the moodin engine that isn't fully twinview aware, since we seem to have narrowed it down to twinview.

Has someone tried the new patch? Does it works?

Hi Robert,

your patch works and I modified it a bit further to take the actual mIconSetSize and mImageSpacer given in the Theme.rc into account to be a bit more flexible.

NOTE: I also changed the Theme.rc file of the default theme with resides in package kubuntu-default-settings to contain a valid value for ImageSpacer. So to test the new patch you also have to use the new Theme.rc I add as a attachment.

To fix the bug the new Theme.rc has to replace the old one in kubuntu-default-settings!

Could anyone try it out?

David

argh, just noticed, that there is a printf-leftover in the patch above. it needs to be removed of course...

sry, but NOT giving up! :)

the previous patch was missing the thememoodin.h changes and therefore didn't even build :(
I tested the new patch with dual and single screen setup from a clean "apt-get source"

Both patches (mine and Davids) works fine with my configs (tested with 2 Monitors, Xinerama and TwinView, each with LeftOf and RightOf).
