I've the same problem. Unfortunatly the screenshot seems to be unavailable, so i'm just adding some other strange behaviours i've noticed with tray-icons for kde-applications under ubuntu gnome.

Sometimes tray-icons are completly missing. There is just an empty space reserved where the icons should be. This seems to happen completly at random. I've witnessed a similar behaviour as well with "amarok", so it seems to be not just an kopete-problem.
Occasionally when the kopete icon is missing, it is placed in an tiny window (maybe 60x60 px - completly with border and and space for the window-title) at the top left corner of the desktop (just below the ubuntu-icon in an standard-gnome).
And at some times the icon appears at the top left corner of the screen (hovering over the ubuntu icon).

The "tiny window" you describe, is what the screenshot showed, which sadly I've lost. I can confirm your behaviour and has happened randomly for me with both amarok and kopete.

What window managers are you using? And are they using (i.e. configured to use) AIGLX or XGL?

It was a plain gnome desktop. It's only ever happened with gnome with the exception of: when running kde and you start beryl, sometimes the adept updater icon detaches itself in the same way.

Changing to kdebase as it's a kicker problem, not kopete. I found #110928 which is almost the same apart from when I used to see it, it was a proper window with title bar and it was only as big as the icon. Edited the original report to contain the new screenshot.
