Bug Description

Binary package hint: kopete

Sometimes when a new chat window opens, i.e. I press the "View" button on the notification, which says that a new message has been recieved - Gnome crashes instantly and i get back to the login screen. Generally, it happens around 20% of all the cases i want to read a recieved message, which needs to open the chat window.

Kernel 2.6.22.14-46, also tried 2.6.23.14, kopete - latest from the repos, videodriver - nvidia 169.07 (geforce 6600gt). I will gladly provide any other info on the subject.

I copied these reports exactly after the crash. It was not hard to reproduce the bug, i was just sending myself messages from another ICQ client and account, and closing the message window each time i pressed the "view" button on the notification of incoming message. On the 5th or 6th try GNOME crashed.

I can confirm the bug.
It's related to nvidia drivers. No probs with 104.23. Problems started since 169.04 was released.
Obviously, latest nvidia drivers release (169.09) didn't fix the bug.

I've got exactly the same problem with OpenSuSE 10.3 with KDE, so it is not Ubintu-specific and even not GNOME-specific.

That changes much. I believe, Parthan, that you should change the topic name to "kopete crashes the desktop" or something similar.

I can confirm this. When opening a chat window for the first time, either I get a "Process for the File Protocol Died Unexpectedly" dialog, or X crashes. This is in Hardy using the nvidia drivers on an amd64 system.

no, unfortunately, there has not been any fixes. And that bug makes lots of people just leave useing Kopete, and I believe that the importance should be set to Critical, cause and instant desktop crash can cause losses of information! For this not to happen to me, i'm not using kopete any more.

if this bug was caused by Nvidia graphic card.. then they ought to have fixed it a long time ago since this bug has been around for quite sometime now.. and why do i get this feeling that if it were say windoze ..i.e windows crashed when u open yahoo msger .. the probelm would have been fixed by Nvidia in a sec.. if they dont care about linux users there should at least open up their drivers so that those who care can make something compactible with linux..

How can a bug which crashes X upon receipt of an instant message possibly be have an "undecided" level of importance?
As far as I can tell, the only fix for this is to nuke everything and then install a version of Ubuntu that's years old.

It's not fair to place the blame for this all on Nvidia, even if it's entirely their fault- a change to whatever Kopete does that crashes X would help us all, pointing the finger at Nvidia while doing nothing about it is helping no-one. Nvidia no doubt can't be bothered trying to debug a 3rd party application to find out how it convinces the driver to finally crash.

Canonical sent me this broken OS, it's THEIR responsibility to put pressure on Nvidia and the Kopete authors to sort something out, yet I see no mention of anyone contacting either organization, and in the meantime three releases have gone by with a bug that instantly crashes everything on the desktop.

What the hell is going on at Ubuntu HQ these days that something like this can be of an "undecided" level of importance, let alone left unpatched after so long?

My X server also crashes if compiz is running and I try to view incoming messages. But I'm wondering that nobody is mentioning "compiz", "beryl" or "composite" here. Does this problem also occur on systems without such visual effects? That would be new to me.

I have some new info:

I have been trying new things with this bug and i have find this:

Ubuntu 8.04 32bits with Nvidia 169.12, Kernel 2.6.24-19-generic, Kopete 0.12.7, GeForce 7400 crashes only when the Visual Effects are set so if the visual effects are disabled it doesn't crash.

And other interesting note:

Ubuntu 8.04 64bits with Nvidia 169.12, Kernel 2.6.24-19-generic, Kopete 0.12.7, GeForce 7000 never crashes.

Same here,

Ubuntu 8.04 64 bits
Dual core Xeon
nvidia quadro 4500 FX
Compiz fusion

I've noticed it also happen when I want to "rise" Amarok and click on its icon, X sometimes crash
So it may have something to do with KDE inside gnome, the task bar / compiz-fuzion and nvidia, probably quite difficult to fix.

Where can we find some information about the reason of X crashing ? Some log file ?
It's a very annoying bug

Thxs in advance
Simon

PS A simple work-around is to disable bubbles in Kopete 8-|
