Bug Description

Binary package hint: krita

I've used gifs with krita previously (in Dapper,...) but in Edgy (upgraded from Dapper) it doesn't work anymore.
- In the open file dialog gif is not a supported format and you canot choose a gif file.
- If you drag'n'drop a file from konqueror then a popup shows telling you to specify the format of the file, but gif is not an option.
- There are even gifs on the "last opened" pane, but ti happens the same as when droping a file.

I've googled around a bit and have read that it happens to other people, but could not find anything about upstream not supporting gifs anymore.

I can confirm this with krita version 1.6.0-0ubuntu1.
According to upstream documentation krita has GIF support, only animated GIFs are not animated.

I have a version of 1:1.5.2-0ubuntu2 (from edgy) and krita can open/save normal gifs.
1.6.0 is in feisty, not edgy, so summary should be changed.

I'm going to also confirm this bug; the 1.6.x packages for Krita available do NOT have .gif support (either import or export) enabled.

My original report was from Edgy with jridell packages of koffice 1.6.0 (sorry I didn't tell about it originally, i didn't even notice it). Now I've upgraded one machine to Feisty Herd 3 and the official 1.6.1 packages.

Seems it isn't working either in this version. Gif are still NOT supported in krita as of koffice 1.6.1 and Feisty Herd 3.

Just talked to Jonathan Riddell; according to him, Krita now relies on the graphicsmagick package for gif support, graphicsmagick is in universe and since gm is basically a fork of imagemagick (which is already in main) it probably wouldn't get into main. If we want Krita with gif support, we need to compile it from source.

Since koffice is modular, its import/export filters are plugins that can be added and removed without affecting the operation of the programs themselves. So couldn't this filter be provided as an add-on package? It could go in universe, so it could depend on graphicsmagick without needing graphicsmagick to get into main first.

I'd volunteer to do this myself if I knew how, but I don't, so I'll just leave a record of my thoughts here in case someone with the right skills would be kind enough to consider the idea. :)

(Note that it's not just gif support that's in question here: the graphicsmagick filter also provides support for other common formats like bmp and xcf.)

KOffice2 has replaced KOffice1 in Kubuntu 10.04, and currently Krita2 doesn't have a gif option to begin with. Fortunately it looks like there will be one for the next Krita release, looking at the blogs. Closing this report since there's not much to do about Krita in the older releases.
