Bug Description
Install Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop,
Install Gimp
Install kicad and kicad-doc-en
Execute kicad,
Go to help/contents (Ctrl-H)
Then gimp appears.
Evince should be executed for the pdf files (It is installed since, this is a fresh install)
Note: I don't know if this bug corresponds to kicad, gimp or some lib related.

Found a possible solution to this on a related webpage. Open a command line and type
mimeopen -d <some .pdf document on your system>
Choose evince or your preferred pdf viewer as the default. Should reset the defaults, but recommend closing kicad and restarting. This worked for me on Ubuntu 13.10.
